Acting 101:You can do it from your desk

When I taught my kids’ drama course this summer, I had to find a way to introduce them to acting. I didn’t want them quoting any silly B movies or quoting some simple sitcom. I wanted them to start with the basics. I wanted them to understand movement without the use of words. I wanted to teach them pantomime. You know what pantomime is, you’ve heard the word shortening since you were a kid. You even witnessed Mike Myers when he was caught in a nutshell as “Austin Powers” or Johnny Depp in “Benny and Joon”. Pantomime is miming….
Here is today’s home study acting class from 2.0 to you.

Our exercise: Make breakfast
Supplies: Your body and your imagination
Time: 2 minutes max
Location: an IMAGINARY kitchen from a house or an apartment that you have been to before.
Directions: Pantomime every single step of making your desired breakfast. Be sure to be as detailed as possible. If you open a refrigerator door, close it. If you unscrew a bottle top, screw it back. Return to cabinents and refridgerator doors that are in the same place each time. Pay attention to the height of your counter tops, etc.
Hint: Use a kitchen that you are very familiar with to “prepare” a breakfast you have made before. Think through every step in detail.
