How do you watch movies?

I watch movies and television the way I am sure chefs eat food. I would imagine that it would be hard for a world-class chef to simply order from a menu without looking at all of the selections. I imagine it would be even harder to enjoy the lamb without calculating just how much Rosemary he would have seasoned the lamb with. This is how I watch movies, with a critical eye. As a critic should.

Joe Carlos used to tell me I didn’t watch nearly enough movies. Geoff would say that I was not nearly dedicated enough. But a more distant muse said it best.

“When you watch yourself, why aren’t you as critical of you as you are of them? Are you afraid to admit what you would say about your performance if it was someone else? Don’t be afraid of it, embrace that.”

I am not afraid anymore.
